The research on mixed families in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey has presented a rather gloomy picture of societies in all three countries, marked by the low levels of acceptance of otherness, sometimes latent and sometimes openly displayed racism and xenophobia, and widespread stereotypes and prejudices against the immigrants. On the personal level, there is a problem of (at least initial) rejection of the mixed family by the parents and relatives. more .. »

objectives

* to undertake research on representations and constructions of the national ‘self’ and the national ‘other’, as related to issues of gender and migration in the media, focusing particularly on literature, television and film.
* to identify the ways in which dominant and mainstream conceptualizations about gender and migration as well as tensions and contradictions about ‘us’ and ‘them’ are reproduced in the media.  <--more-->

The goal of the present research is to investigate the relationship between gender and migration, and explore their influence on the relations within the mixed and transnational families. The report will analyse the way gender dynamics within mixed and transnational families are conditioned by the existing national policies and institutional frameworks dealing with immigrants, the prevailing traditional patterns of gender relations in families, and by the interactions between people with different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds.

The use of this research is manifold concerning the gender dynamics of intercultural interaction. In the research on mixed families, it points out that intercultural interaction in families, at least for the sample studied in the Turkish case, does not result in a major transformation in gender roles. However, in the mixed marriages there seems to be relatively more sharing of opinions and seeking consensus among the couple in household tasks and household decisions.
