In most partner countries, research on migration (both emigration, immigration and transit migration) has tended to progress from more general quantitative to more context specific and fine tuned qualitative studies, deploying a variety of research methods based on ethnographic, narrative and discourse analytic methodologies, such as participant observation, focus groups, in-depth interviews and life histories. Such approaches are considered conducive towards developing a gendered understanding of migration and integration processes that integrates macro and micro perspectives of analysis while foregrounding migrants’ agency, and are prioritized by all partners as most appropriate for the thematic areas addressed by the Ge.M.IC. project. more .. »

objectives

* to identify methodologies applied in the reviewed research studies.
* to outline relevant methodologies and present the most appropriate ones for the subsequent thematic case studies.
* to identify and review literature on migration in relation to gender and intercultural interactions, with reference to economic, political and socio-cultural changes occurring in ‘host’ and/or ‘sending’ societies, as a result of these migration processes.

The literature on gender produced by the Romanian academia has covered multiple dimensions of this field of study and seems to have gradually evolved from more theory-oriented publications towards more practical, and what is more important, multi- and interdisciplinary oriented applications. Adopting the research methods of sociology and anthropology (sociological enquiry based on questionnaires, structured interviews, focus groups, surveying media representations, cross-cultural comparison, in-depth examination of context, participant observation) has represented a step forward towards the successful introduction of intersectionality as a means of bridging research on gender, class and ethnicity in order to understand how multiple identities shape the life of minority women.

Researchers use a wide spectrum of terms to refer to marital unions composed of partners coming from different religions, ethnicities or countries: mixed marriages, intercultural families, cross-ethnic intermarriages, cross-cultural marriages or intermarriages. Mixed families are one of the main areas where migration generated intercultural relations are manifested and many of the respective studies are investigation of the relationship between intermarriage and cultural diversity. Social scientists thus turn attention to mixed families to gain valuable insight into the nature of inter-group relations. Mixed marriages are most often investigated as a measure of social distance, assimilation and inter-group harmony – in other words they become the focus of studies that are interested in processes of cultural adaptation, levels of integration of various minority and immigrant groups as well as the nature of power relations between different states and cultures.

Migrant studies in Italy assume, on one hand, an important role to scientific research, attested by a growing number of publications, journals, and websites. On the other hand, the nexus between migration and social alarm – that is still quite predominant in the mainstream debate, as well as in government policies – is continuously challenged by an increasing quantity and quality of studies focusing first of all on the agency of the migrant women and men.

What is lacking in researching trafficking in human beings in FYROM are the stories of the victims. It is true that the practice shows that only few women-victims of trafficking were both able and willing to share their story in order to help other potential victims. Most of the victims suffer great trauma, so therapists (psychologists or psychiatrists) and social workers have to work with them, in order to help them overcome or mitigate the consequences of trauma and to be able to articulate the event.

The issue of gender and migration started being a subject of discussion in the Greek literature around 2003. Before that, very few texts were published on the issue, many of them concerning trafficking and prostitution. Until now, though, the topic of gender remains within the limits of a “closed” discussion and is dealt with as a “special” issue; most of the literature on migration does not include gender aspects, apart from the literature that has gender as its main focus. Although in many texts we find “men” and “women” as sex categories, there is no further analysis of gender as a social relation that affects all aspects of migrants’ lives. Gender -not only in the Greek literature – is not perceived as a constitutive element/factor of migration, like class or race, that are included more often in studies on migration.

There are three main trends in gender and migration research in Turkey. The first trend is to rely upon aggregate secondary data utilizing the TUIK (Turkish Statistical Institute) annual reports on migration and tourism. However, because of the nature of migratory practices (either circular or transit migration) it is extremely hard to make an account of the existing movements of the people using the existing measurement techniques. This limits the analysis of the existing situation.
