Alexandra Zavos

Alexandra Zavos is currently finishing her PhD on “Gender, Migration and the Anti-racist Movement in Athens” funded by Manchester Metropolitan University, UK (2004-today). She holds an MSc in Critical Psychology (2004) from the same university and has a first degree in Sociology, from Panteion University (1991). She is a trained systemic group therapist at the Athenian Institute of Anthropos (1987-1997).

Her PhD research involved a feminist ethnographic study of migrants’ practices of socio-cultural integration and political participation in antiracist groups and mobilizations in Athens, Greece. She has focused particularly on the intersections between gendered and ethnocentric dynamics of practices of migrant political representation in the Greek Left. She has worked closely for many years with the Network for the Social Support of Refugees and Migrants and is founding member of the Network for the Right to the City, both of which are active in Athens.

She has worked as assistant coordinator and master trainer for the Ministry of Health Program “Educating the Person of the 21st Century” designed and implemented by the Athenian Institute of Anthropos (1995-2000). She has worked as program developer and coordinator, trainer and youth worker for the NGO ARSIS – Social Organization for the Support of Youth (1997-2002). She has also worked as researcher and trainer for the University of Athens, in the interdisciplinary intercultural education program “Muslim Children’s Education” implemented in Thrace and Athens with the Muslim minority of Greece (1998-2002). Her MSc thesis “Mirrors of Identity: Representations of Greek Muslims in Athens” is based on research conducted during her work with the Muslim minority.
