Ge.M.IC. will explore the constructions of national ‘self’ and the ‘migrant’ represented as ‘other’, in the media and in particular literature and film. Furthermore as research in film and cultural studies has highlighted, film is a particularly strong medium in and through which identities are represented, reproduced and challenged.

In this process of identity construction through film, gender -an important aspect of subjectivity- plays an important role in naturalizing and normalizing power hierarchies and inequalities. Thus film represents a political and ideological medium that draws on and reproduces or skews currently available discourses on belonging and identity. The thematic study will focus on the discourses of gender, national ‘self’ and migrant ‘other’ in film in order to identify both dominant and resistant tendencies.
